Solo Exhibit in Germany

For the first time, Nina Boesch's collages will be exhibited in Germany! The three-month solo show takes place at ART15, in the historic center of Bremen from April 7 to July 2.

Inspired by everyday life in the city and the pursuit of making New York a greener place, the exhibit “Upcycling New York” features about twenty of Nina Boesch’s collages made entirely from used and expired MetroCards. Cut into small pieces and sorted by color, the MetroCard provides a strong and iconic color palette—yellow, orange, blue, black, and white—that makes Boesch’s body of work so unique and recognizable. A single collage may contain over 10,000 of these small colorful pieces, stemming from as many as 300 MetroCards per artwork. The result is a collection of mesmerizing mosaic-like depictions of New York’s landmarks, city scenes, portraits, and urban animals.

Boesch’s work pays tribute to the city she is proud to call home. The concept behind it is a reflection of her eco–conscious upbringing in Germany. Having been raised in a country where recycling is strictly regulated, Boesch has always had a hard time adjusting to New York’s trash problem and culture of disposability. She arrived in New York City in the summer of 2001 and commuted by subway every day. Witnessing other subway riders carelessly toss their used and expired MetroCards on trains and in the stations, Boesch thought of an artistic challenge: she started upcycling MetroCards into artwork. Over the last fifteen years, her endeavor has turned into a serious art venture appreciated by a global following and art collectors across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
